Sump Pump Installation & Replacement in Burlington County, NJ
If your basement relies on a sump pump, it is the most important appliance in the house during a storm. A partner contractor can replace a failing pump, add a backup or install a new pit.

Signs your sump pump needs attention
- It runs constantly, cycles on and off rapidly, or makes grinding or rattling noises.
- It does not start when you slowly pour a bucket of water into the pit.
- The float catches on the pit wall or the cord.
- Rust, a burned smell, or a tripped GFCI or breaker.
- Water pours back into the pit after the pump shuts off, which points to a failed check valve.
Options a contractor may suggest
- Primary pump replacement. Pumps differ in horsepower, construction and switch type. The right size depends on how much water comes in and how high and far it has to be pushed.
- Battery backup pump. Storms that bring heavy rain often also knock out power. A backup pump with its own battery keeps working for a while when the main pump cannot.
- Water-powered backup. Some homes on public water can use a backup that runs off household water pressure. It needs adequate pressure and generally a backflow preventer; it is usually not suitable for homes on a private well.
- High-water alarm or a Wi-Fi alert, so you know before the floor is wet.
- A sealed lid, which keeps debris out, cuts humidity and is often part of radon mitigation.
Where the water goes matters
Sump water should discharge outside, away from the foundation, so it does not circle right back in. Most sewer utilities prohibit connecting a sump pump to the sanitary sewer, because rainwater overloads sewer systems and treatment plants. If your home is on a septic system, the sump should never discharge into it. Discharging onto a neighbor's property or onto a sidewalk where it can freeze can also cause problems. Ask the contractor where the line will go and check with your township or sewer utility if you are unsure.
Electrical safety
A sump pump should be plugged directly into a properly grounded outlet, not an extension cord. A dedicated circuit is commonly recommended so another appliance cannot trip it. If new wiring is needed, that is electrical work that in New Jersey generally requires a licensed electrical contractor and permit.
Test it before the storm
Pour water into the pit a few times a year and before forecast heavy rain. Clear the discharge outlet of leaves and snow, and keep backup batteries maintained according to the manufacturer.
